A Self-Configuring RED Gateway
نویسندگان
چکیده
The congestion control mechanisms used in TCP have been the focus of numerous studies and have undergone a number of enhancements. However, even with these enhancements, TCP connections still experience alarmingly high loss rates, especially during times of congestion. To alleviate this problem, the IETF is considering active queue management mechanisms, such as RED, for deployment in the network. In this paper, we first show that the effectiveness of RED depends, to a large extent, on the appropriate parameterization of the RED queue. We then show that there is no single set of RED parameters that work well under different congestion scenarios. In light of this observation, we propose and experiment with more adaptive RED gateways which self-parameterize themselves based on the traffic mix. Our results show that traffic cognizant parameterization of RED gateways can effectively reduce packet loss while maintaining high link utilizations under a range of network loads. Keywords—Congestion control, Internet, TCP, RED, queue management.

A self-configuring RED gateway for quality of service (QoS) networks
This paper studies self-configuring Random Early Detection (RED) gateways for Quality of Service (QoS) networks. Existing work only considers the adaptive parameter setting of RED gateways for networks with best effort flows. This paper focuses on QoS networks in which both assured and best effort flows co-exist. RED with in/out (RIO) is an extension of RED for QoS networks, which maintains two...
متن کاملRevisiting Adaptive RED: Beyond AIMD Algorithms
We propose a new MIMD Adaptive RED and revisit two well-known adaptive algorithms for ARED, (Feng et al., A Self Configuring RED Gateway, Infocom, 1999) and (Floyd et al., Adaptive RED). We use the steady-state relation between the maximum marking (dropping) probability, max,, and the average queue length, ij, to argue that different adaptive schemes, AIMD, MIMD, etc., can be proposed when max,...

This paper reports the first self-stabilizing Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). BGP is the standard inter-domain routing protocol in the Internet. Self-stabilization is a technique to tolerate arbitrary transient faults. متن کاملAnalyzing the Impact of TCP Connections Variation on Transient Behavior of RED Gateway
Several gateway-based congestion control mechanism have been proposed to support an end-to-end congestion control mechanism of TCP (Transmission Control Protocol). One of promising gateway-based congestion control mechanisms is a RED (Random Early Detection) gateway. Although a number of researches on the steady state performance of the RED gateway have been performed, the transient behavior of...

Changing the architecture of the Ericsson Billing Gateway application has shown to solve the problem with dynamic memory management that decreased the performance. The new architecture that is focused on processes instead of threads showed increased performance. It also allowed for the possibility to adjust the process / thread configuration towards the network topology and hardware. Measuremen...
